Dame Lucie Rie DBE (1902-1995) was born Lucie Gompertz in Vienna. She set up her first studio in 1925 in the same building as Lotte Meitner-Graf's portrait studio. She fled to London in 1938 where she had a new studio in converted stables near Hyde Park.
Her work is represented in The Museum of Modern Art in New York, in the UK at the York Art Gallery and the Victoria & Albert Museum which also houses a reconstruction of her studio.
